Tonight – The Saskatoon Blades are in Medicine Hat for their 3rd meeting of the season with the Tigers, and final stop of the regular season at the Canalta Centre. Saskatoon is looking to capture their 4th straight win which would get the Blades to a 500 record through 15 games. Ryan Kubic has been solid for the Blades coming off a 35 save performance against the Hurricanes and having earned 1st star of the game in his last 3 consecutive starts.
The opponent – The reigning Central Division champs haven’t exactly been ferocious lately. The Tigers got shelled in back-to-back games last weekend; 9-1 to Moose Jaw on Friday and 4-0 to Swift Current on Saturday. Not pretty numbers for a team as skilled as Medicine Hat, so expect an urgent and aggressive start from the Cats tonight. Last time the Blades visited Medicine Hat the Tigers won 5-2 and scored all 5 goals on the power play.
For Saskatoon – Still one game below 500 the Blades have to keep an even keel and not get too high after winning their last 3 straight. Discipline will be a huge factor, and shoring up the inevitable penalty kill will be top of mind for the Blades. The secondary scoring helped last game as the Blades’ top 3 scorers were held off the board, but that can’t continue for too long… the big guns need to be firing tonight.
The lineup – Lukus MacKenzie is no longer a Blade, but the newest member of the team, 18-year-old Alec Zawatsky, is expected to make his WHL debut. Zawatsky was signed yesterday out of the SJHL where he had 19 points in 13 games. Brad Goethals will sit this one out with an upper body sustained in Wednesday’s bout with the Hurricanes. Between the pipes, you’d have to assume Ryan Kubic will get the nod again as he’s riding a 3 game win streak with a .953 SV% and and 1.64 GAA in that span.
F Logan Christensen – upper body, 3-5 weeks
F Caleb Fantillo – upper body, weekly
F Brad Goethals – upper body, day-to-day
