Blades Stymied by Hurricanes Goalie
The Saskatoon Blades had their 6 game road winning streak snapped Saturday night in Lethbridge as they fell to the Hurricanes by a score of 6-3.
Despite over 50 shots on goal in the game, the Blades weren’t able to handle the Hurricanes who got timely goals to go along with great goaltending from Damien Ketlo.
Speaking of timely goals, the Canes were able to get on the board first as Sam Mckechnie got his fourth goal of the season after a nice saucer pass from 15 year old Reid Duke at the 3:03 mark of the first frame. That was the only scoring of the first period as the Blades had 23 shots on goal but couldn’t seem to buy a marker.
It was Lethbridge once again getting a key goal at a key time to start the second period as Nick Buonassisi got his 9th of the season at only 1:25 of period two. But, Saskatoon was able to pull themselves back into it midway through the second period as they got goals from Josh Nicholls and Dalton Thrower only 41 seconds apart to even the score.
But the timely scoring continued for the Canes as Russell Maxwell fired home a backhand 26 seconds after Saskatoon had tied it to regain the lead for Lethbridge.
The theme continued in the third period as the Hurricanes scored early in the frame as Dalmey-product Jaimen Yakubowksi and Jay Merkley both scored within the first 3:02 to increase the lead to 5-2.
A Matej Stransky goal at 14:01 for the Blades cut back into the lead, but it wasn’t enough as Cam Braes hit the empty net in the final 2 minutes to ice the game, a 6-3 final.
Damien Ketlo was the story of the game as the Lethbridge goalie stopped 52 of 55 shots for the win. Adam Todd was the goalie of record for the Blades as he was beaten 5 times on 34 shots.
Saskatoon will be looking to rebound as they wrap up their 3 game in 3 night Alberta swing in Edmonton tomorrow night against the Oil Kings.
