Blades Host Hot Wheat Kings
The Saskatoon Blades are hoping their hardwork and subsequent momentum from last night’s win can carry over into tonight as they play host to the Brandon Wheat Kings.
The Blades are coming off a gutsy 3-1 win last night over the rival Prince Albert Raiders. The Blades got goals from Cory Millette, Brett Stovin and Nick Zajac, with the Zajac tally standing as the game-winner. In goal, Troy Trombley was the biggest storyline as the 6’6 tender stopped 41 shots for the victory. The penalty kill was the other big catalyst for Saskatoon as that unit went 5 for 5 as the Blades snapped a 4-game losing streak in their first game in 6 calendar days.
Saskatoon will have their hands full with the Wheat Kings, as the lone WHL team from Manitoba have won two straight games and six of their past 10 games. Included in that is a 6-5 win over the Swift Current Broncos last night. Brandon’s record of 24-17-4-0 leaves them first in the division and therefore in a top two spot in the WHL’s Eastern Conference.
Tonight’s game marks the fifth meeting of the season between the Blades and Wheat Kings. Season series results:
October 12th – Blades 5 – Wheat Kings 3 – Millette, Burns, Scherbak, Graham had 1G, 1A each, Alex Moodie had 39 saves.
November 7th – Blades 3 – Wheat Kings 1 – Brett Stovin had 2G, Nathan Burns had 1G and Alex Moodie made 40 saves.
November 13th – Wheat Kings 5 – Blades 2 – Cory Millette had 2G and Troy Trombley made 35 saves.
November 15th – Blades 2 – Wheat Kings 6 – Cory Millete and Nikita Scherbak scored, Alex Moodie made 44 saves.
The Blades are expected to have a new player in the lineup tonight as they have recalled forward Ty Mappin from the AJHL’s Olds Grizzlys. The Blades acquired the rights to Mappin from the Everett Silvertips for a conditional 7th round pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft during last week’s WHL Trade Deadline. The product of Big Valley, AB has spent this season with the Olds Grizzlys of the Alberta Junior Hockey League after posting 17 points in 63 games during his rookie WHL season with the Silvertips last year. He arrives in Saskatoon this afternoon and is expected to wear #37 in his Blades debut.
Tonight’s game will also feature a very special guest as the Blades host North Battleford’s own Andrew Albers. The Minnesota Twins pitcher will be honoured before the game after a very successful major league season this past year. You can read all about the special guest right here.
The puck drops for tonight’s game at 7:05PM from the Credit Union Centre. If you can’t catch the action, you can always tune in online with WHL Live, listen along on 92.9 The Bull or follow @bladeshockey on Twitter for all the game updates. Get your tickets for the meeting with Brandon right here.
