Blades Claw Back to Beat Oil Kings
The Saskatoon Blades overcame a 3-0 first period deficit to defeat the Edmonton Oil Kings 6-4 on Saturday night in Edmonton.
Charles Inglis (Saskatoon, SK) potted two goals while Walker Wintoneak (Flin Flon, MB), Stefan Elliott (North Vancouver, BC), Marek Viedensky (Handlova, Slovakia), and Derek Hulak (Saskatoon, SK) also scored for the Blades, who broke a two-game losing streak with the win.
Edmonton – 1st – T.J. Foster (Garry Nunn) 9:31
The Oil Kings opened the scoring on the 9th of the year from Foster. The 17-year-old pulled the puck out of the left wing corner and, from the faceoff dot, fired a high shot over the right shoulder of Steven Stanford (Calgary, AB).
Edmonton – 1st – Tyler Hlookoff (Klarc Wilson, Sebastian Svendsen) 14:14 pp
Hlookoff gave the Oil Kings a 2-0 lead with a power play goal five minutes later. The defenseman fired a slap shot from the left point that beat Stanford for his 4th of the season.
Edmonton – 1st – Michael Burns (Travis Ewanyk, Svendsen) 18:00
The home squad went up 3-0 on the 8th of the campaign from Burns. Ewaynk dragged the puck out of the right wing corner and fired it on net from the bottom of the circle. Burns, who was parked in front, got a piece of it to beat Adam Morrison (White Rock, BC).
Saskatoon – 2nd – Wintoneak (Duncan Siemens) 2:05 pp
The Blades cut into the lead a little over two minutes into the second period with their first of three power play goals on the night. Siemens (Sherwood Park, AB) carried around from behind the net and got a shot off that was stopped by the pad of goaltender Cam Lanigan. The rebound popped out to Wintoneak, who made no mistake for his 24th goal.
Saskatoon – 2nd – Elliott (Josh Nicholls, Hulak) 7:34
Elliott brought the Blades within one on his 24th of the season. Nicholls (Tsawwassen, BC) put a nifty cross-ice feed on the stick of Elliott at the right circle and the 18-year-old fired a hard snap shot past Lanigan.
Saskatoon – 2nd – Inglis (Gaelan Patterson, Sena Acolatse) 14:34
The Blades tied things up before the second period was out on Inglis’ 18th on the campaign. The sophomore forward carried the puck down the right wing and fired a wrist shot from the top of the circle that found the back of the net.
Saskatoon – 3rd – Inglis (Sam Klassen, Stefan Elliott) 7:07 pp
Inglis picked up his second of the night and 19th of the season with a power play marker seven minutes into the third. Klassen (Watrous, SK) fired a shot from the left side that was stopped by Lanigan. The rebound popped loose to Inglis in the crease and he deposited it into the empty net.
Edmonton – 3rd – Michael St. Croix (Nunn) 7:21
The Oil Kings tied things up at four just 14 seconds later. Nunn broke in all alone and got a shot off that was stopped by Morrison. St. Croix followed up on the rebound and the 16-year-old put home his 17th of the year.
Saskatoon – 3rd – Viedensky (Hulak, Acolatse) 16:55 pp
Viedensky scored his 17th of the season to put the Blades back in front for the final time in the hockey game with a power play goal. Acolatse (Edmonton, AB) fired a quick shot on goal from the left circle that was tipped by Hulak and stopped by Lanigan. Viedensky jumped on the rebound at the side of the net and it was 5-4.
Saskatoon – 3rd- Hulak (Wintoneak) 19:54 en
Hulak sealed it for the Blades with his 31st on the campaign into an empty net. The 20-year-old fought for a loose puck in the neutral zone, cruised in on a breakaway, and found the back of the yawning cage.
In goal, Morrison made 25 saves including a second period penalty shot to earn the victory for the Blades. Stanford got the start for Saskatoon and stopped 5 of 7 shots before being pulled after the second goal. Lanigan turned aside 43 shots in the Oil Kings net in a losing cause.
Final score Saskatoon Blades 6, Edmonton Oil Kings 4.
