GAME DAY PREVIEW: Blades back in Regina for round 2
The Saskatoon Blades are back in Regina tonight for round two of their eight game season series with the Pats. Both squads are coming off a heated battle on Saturday night in Regina where the Pats came out on top 7-3.
The Blades will need to stay disciplined this time around without surrendering their pesky presence in the Brandt Centre. As emotions rose, it seemed to work in favour of the Blades as they managed to claw back to get within 2 goals. Last season the Blades picked up their only win of the season series versus the Pats in Regina. Still, they’ll need to tighten up from Saturday’s performance when the Pats scored four power play goals on ten chances.
Saskatoon will also have to make due without a couple regular centermen. Logan Christensen suffered an upper body injury in practice on Monday and is expected to be sidelined for the next 6 weeks. Rookie Kirby Dach will not be making the trip to Regina or through Alberta this weekend after suffering an injury as a result of a hit from behind taken Saturday in Regina which earned Pats’ d-man Liam Schioler and 2 game ban.
With Saskatoon still carrying 16 forwards, no prospects will be called upon for replacements.
But the Blades will get some experience back in goal as Ryan Kubic returns to the lineup. The veteran netminder is expected to start this evening after sitting out last weekend with an injury, which left the Blades with a pair of rookie backstops in Joel Grzybowski and Nolan Maier to face the power house Swift Current Broncos and Regina Pats. Nolan Maier has been returned to Yorkton of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.
A big positive from Saturday was the Blades scoring their first power play goal of the season. While the percentages aren’t great right now (1/18 = 5.6%), it’s a start. Braylon Shmyr has 7 points in his last 3 outings and will be leaned on to ignite the man advantage with his veteran line mate, Cam Hebig.
Saskatoon is staying the night in Regina after the game before heading to Alberta to take on Medicine Hat Friday night and then the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday.
Game time tonight is 7:00pm, and you can tune into all the action live on the official voice of the Blades, 92.9 The Bull FM with Les Lazaruk. Pre-game show begins at 6:30pm.
