The Saskatoon Blades have signed 2000 born defenseman, Randen Schmidt, to a standard player agreement this week.
A native of Regina, Schmidt is currently playing with his hometown Regina Pat Canadians of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA League. Through the first seven games of the season with Regina, Schmidt has posted 5 assists. Standing at 5’11” and 165lbs, Schmidt attended Blades camp on an invite basis this past Fall.
After playing forward most of his life, Schmidt made the transition to the backend last season making him a hybrid style defender. His natural offensive instincts give Randen an advantage, especially on the power play. In 2015, Schmidt represented Team Saskatchewan the Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup, posting 1 assist in 4 games.
“Randen is an intelligent, smooth skating and competitive defenseman who possesses a solid playmaking ability.” explained Blades head scout, Dan Tencer. “He’s shown an exciting development curve after switching to this position from forward less than a year ago. He’s a high character young man, he puts in the work to get better and our scouting staff believes strongly in his upside and ability to contribute meaningfully to our team.”
Schmidt is expected to remain with the Regina Pat Canadians for the immediate future.
