Saskatoon, SK – Many newcomers have never skated, been to an ice rink or even witnessed a hockey game.
The Saskatoon Blades and Ecologik are thrilled to be teaming up to change that – and make history in the process – as they stage “Welcome to the World” on January 22nd. Newcomers will be welcomed to the Blades game Sunday afternoon where they will learn about our nations favourite game. Last year was the first time the Blades hosted “Welcome to the World” with almost 400 newcomers in attendance. This time around, the Blades have upped the ante.
Prior to the game they will go through a “Hockey 101” to learn all things about hockey, take in the Blades and Swift Current Broncos game, and afterwards they will all hit the ice with the Saskatoon Blades and try it out for themselves for the first time. There will also be a Citizenship Ceremony taking place for 20 newcomers. This will mark the first time ever a junior hockey team has staged a Citizenship Ceremony in Western Canada.
“We’re thrilled to welcome newcomers to Saskatoon and use this beautiful game to make them feel more a part of the community,” said Blades President Steve Hogle. “It’s also a chance for us to share with our fans the value newcomers bring to our community. We owe a debt of gratitude to Ecologik and the Saskatoon Open Door Society for helping us to make this happen”.
The Blades and Ecologik have teamed up to take care of tickets and transportation to and from the game. Ecologik’s founder, Bob Behari, is an inspirational story for the newcomers after arriving in Canada as an immigrant in 1977. Since then, Behari has built a number of successful businesses which he credits to the great opportunity here in Canada.
“I’m very honoured to support this event with the Blades and the Open Door Society. As a newcomer myself I know Saskatoon offers us endless opportunities,” explained Behari who was overwhelmed by the support during Tuesday media conference.
Game time is 2:00pm Sunday, January 22nd as the Blades host the Swift Current Broncos. Tickets are available at the Blades office by calling 306-975-8844, SaskTel Centre box offices, or online here.
