GAME DAY PREVIEW: Blades visit Pats for Tuesday tilt
Tonight… The Saskatoon Blades head into the Queen City to take on the top team in the league, the Regina Pats. It’s the 6th and final meeting between the highway 11 rivals. The Blades will look to snap a 2 game slide while the Pats try for their 5th in a row.
The Last Game… Mason McCarty (20th) and Logan Christensen (11th) each scored in a 3-2 loss to the Swift Current Broncos Saturday on Saturday night. The Blades outshot the Broncos 37-30 but gave up a late goal in the final minute.
Head to head… The Pats have won 4/5 meetings with the Blades this season; Saskatoon’s only win coming in overtime on December 10th in Regina. Braylon Shmyr (5GP-2G-3A) and Michael Farren (5GP-3G-1A) lead the Blades offense vs the Pats… Regina Captain, Adam Brooks, has 3goals and 6 helpers vs Saskatoon this season.
No love lost… It’s been an emotional season series between the Blades and Pats this season beginning with the 9-6 barn burner back on November 4th which also featured a line brawl. In 5 meetings there’s been 8 fighting majors handed out per side, including 3 fights in the last meeting on February 22nd.
So you’re sayin’ there’s a chance… The Blades have 63 points… The Calgary Hitmen have 66 points. The Hitmen are in Red Deer tomorrow to take on the Rebels (68pts). There are plenty of different scenarios, but the best chance of the Blades forcing even a tie-breaker with the Hitmen will mean Saskatoon must win their remaining 3 games, and hope for some help. The odds aren’t great, Calgary closes out the season with a home & home series vs the last place Kootenay ICE. In the event of a tie-breaker, Calgary would have home ice and ti would take place on March 21st.
Streaking… ’97 F Braylon Shmyr extended his point streak to 6 games on Saturday. In his last 6 games, Shmyr has 10 points (5G-5A). The 19 year old missed 6 games in February due to injury, but has only been held off the scoresheet once in his last 12 games played dating back to January 30th.
Draft Watch… ’99 F Josh Paterson has 35 points (15G-20A) and is one of only 3 Blades to have played in all 69 games this season. ’99 D Mark Rubinchik has quickly become a fan favourite known for his punishing physical play, and chipping in offensively with 21 points and 52 PIM’s in 60 games this season. ’99 F Logan Christensen has 25 points this season and has played in all 69 games.
