Tonight – The Blades will look to build off last night’s big win in Swift Current over the Broncos as they welcome the Brandon Wheat Kings for game 1 of of an 8 game season series. The Blades handed the Swift Current Broncos just their 2nd regulation loss last night and had big performances from Cam Hebig who scored his first career hat-trick, and Ryan Kubic who made 33 saves, including 2 penalty shots to earn the games 1st star honours. Tonight is the final home game for Saskatoon for almost 2 weeks, so they’ll be hungry to give fans at SaskTel Centre a victory against the always tough Wheaties.
The opponent – Many in the WHL forgot about the Brandon Wheat Kings heading into this season with Nolan Patrick likely staying in the NHL, and most of the attention being on the 100th Memorial Cup hosts in Regina, and their closest rivals in the Moose Jaw Warriors. But the Wheaties are off to a blazing start and currently sit in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference with a 9-4-0-1 record. They’ll probably bring a little extra oomph into Saskatoon tonight after losing 4-1 in Prince Albert last night despite nearly doubling the Raiders on the shot clock (35-19).
For Saskatoon – It’s another tough opponent tonight for the Blades and if they use last night’s win as confidence and momentum rather than a sigh of relief, they’ll have a chance. When the big dogs come to play, so does the rest of the pack. Cam Hebig will need to lead the offense once again and after a stellar, 1st star performance last night it’s likely Ryan Kubic will get the chance to follow up between the pipes. The Blades will also need a big night from their penalty killers as the Wheaties boast the best man advantage in the league with a 35.5% success rate.
The Lineup – Spliting up Cam Hebig and Braylon Shmyr seemed to work last night in Swift, so don’t expect any changes there. Michael Farren did take warmups last night but was a late scratch, so the sophomore winger could draw back in tonight. Tyler Lees made his season debut last night and scored a goal, making a strong case to stay in the lineup tonight. Caleb Fantillo sat out last night’s game with the flu, but hopes to be back which would mean Jake Kustra will likely move back to the blue line after playing wing on the 4th line last night.
F Logan Christensen – upper body, 4-6 weeks
F Bradon Machado – upper body, day-to-day
