RECAP: Blades complete 4-goal comeback to best Wheat Kings

Saskatoon, SK – A four goal third period helped the Blades win their third straight and comeback to beat the Brandon Wheat Kings 4-2 on Saturday night.

Eight different Blades recorded a point, including Majid Kaddoura who had a goal and an assist, as well as Nolan Kneen who registered his third game winning goal of the season.

The Blades now earned a point or more in their last seven home games dating back to October 6th and won both their home fixtures this weekend back-to-back.

In the first period the Blades had three power play opportunities but were unable solve pesky Wheat Kings’ netminder Jiri Patera. Colton Dach had the Blades best chance of the period as he was sprung for a breakaway but unable to convert. The Wheat Kings then got a breakaway of their owners Johnny Hooker was taken down and awarded a penalty shot which he converted to put the Wheat Kings up 1-0 to end the first period.

The second period was very similar to the first as the Blades still couldn’t solve Patera despite outshooting the victors. Conversely, Brandon doubled their lead with just 43 seconds to go in the frame by knocking home the puck as it bounced around in Saskatoon’s goal crease, making it 2-0 Wheaties.

With the final 20 minutes upon them, Saskatoons’ lines changed and so did the game. Just 2:25 into the final frame Kaddoura threw the puck on net to beat a screened Patera which pulled the Blades within one.

Saskatoon tied the game a few minutes later as Aiden De La Gorgendiere and Kaddoura worked the puck up top before eventually putting it on net and where Cyle McNabb cashed in on rebound to tie the game with his 2nd goal of the season.

Minutes later and the Blades had the lead as Riley McKay was robbed backdoor by Patera which rebounded out to Kneen in the slot. Kneen one-timed the puck which hit a Wheat Kings defender and fortuitously rainbowed into the back of the net over Brandon’s goaltender, putting the Blades up 3-2.

Kyle Crnkovic put the icing on the cake by adding an empty netter to ensure Saskatoon’s 4-2 victory.

The Blades are now off until next Saturday when they play the Calgary Hitmen at SaskTel Centre for Video Game Night presented by Konica Minolta – puck drop is at 7pm.

Later this week, Nolan Maier and Chase Wouters will both be playing in the 2019 CIBC Canada/Russia series for team WHL on Wednesday in Saskatoon and Thursday in Prince Albert.
